Advantages of the Halo Approach
The advantage of marking certain voxels as “to be sacrificed” is to inform the optimizer which voxels shall be chosen when reducing the coverage. This prevents bad compromises, such as reducing the coverage in PTV voxels that are far away from any OAR.
Planning tools that lack this automatic halo generation must typically manually create helping structures for the same purpose. The advantages of our approach are:

- A guarantee that the halo object has exactly the right size that fits to the allowed “sacrifice” in PTV coverage, thereby offering precise control over the compromise between PTV coverage and OAR sparing
